“Free” comes in three kinds: a free plan you can keep forever, a free trial that turns into a paid plan, and a money-back guarantee that is free only if you cancel in time.
A free VPN is paid for somehow: by paying customers, by a data cap that nudges you to upgrade or, at worst, by selling what you do online. We list only free plans from companies that also sell a paid service and publish a privacy policy.

The best free VPN for Australians: Proton VPN Free
Proton’s free plan sits under the same no-logs policy as its paid plans, which Proton says has been audited by Securitum. Its free-plan page, read on 13 October 2026, also promises no time limit and no ads.
The catch is what the free plan leaves out: streaming, file-sharing (P2P) and your choice of country. The app picks your server from a short list, so do not count on Australia. For an encrypted connection on café or airport Wi-Fi, none of that matters.

An app store search for “free VPN” turns up hundreds of names you have never heard of. Before installing one, check who runs it, whether its privacy policy says what it logs, and how it makes money. If you cannot answer the last one, you are the product.
