There are three ways to try a VPN without committing: a free trial, a free plan, or a money-back guarantee. This page sets out which of those each provider offers, based on the providers’ own websites.

Surfshark free trial
Surfshark’s website offers a 7-day free trial. According to its free-trial page, the trial is available on its 12-month and 24-month plans and covers up to three devices. You choose a plan when you sign up, and Surfshark says you are charged for that plan when the 7 days end, so cancel before then if you do not want to continue.
NordVPN free trial
NordVPN’s website did not list a free trial when we checked on 13 October 2026. What its pricing page does list is a 30-day money-back guarantee on its plans: you pay upfront and can ask for a refund within that period.
ExpressVPN free trial
ExpressVPN’s website did not list a free trial when we checked on 13 October 2026. Its order page lists a 30-day money-back guarantee for new users.
Free plans
A free plan has no time limit and needs no payment details, but it comes with limits. The table above shows which providers publish a free plan. Proton VPN’s pricing page, for example, says its free plan covers one device with servers in a limited set of countries chosen for you.
Free trial or money-back guarantee?
- A free trial costs nothing unless you forget to cancel. You usually still enter payment details.
- A money-back guarantee means paying first and asking for a refund. Check the provider’s refund terms before relying on it; one independent reviewer notes that Proton VPN refunds only the unused part of a subscription.
- A free plan is the only option with no payment details at all.
