Mullvad Review Australia

Mullvad is the VPN that privacy people recommend to each other. There is no email address, no username and no discount countdown: you are given a random account number, you pay a flat price, and you can post them cash in an envelope if you like. It is run from Gothenburg by the two people who founded it in 2009. The trade-off is that it is built for privacy first and entertainment a distant second.

Pros

  • Sign up with an account number only: no email or name needed
  • One flat price whether you pay for a month or a year, with no renewal jump
  • Servers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney
  • Audited repeatedly by outside security firms, most recently in 2026
  • Police left empty-handed when they turned up with a search warrant in 2023

Cons

  • Unreliable for Netflix and BBC iPlayer in independent tests
  • A 14-day refund period, shorter than the usual 30
  • Five devices per account
  • Priced in euros, so the Australian cost moves with the exchange rate
  • No port forwarding since 2023

Mullvad price in Australia

Mullvad charges the same amount every month however long you stay. There is no two-year deal and nothing to renew at a higher rate, which makes it dearer per month than rivals’ long-term offers and the easiest of all to budget for.

It bills in euros, so the Australian-dollar figure above is a conversion and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. The refund period is 14 days and does not apply to cash payments.

Mullvad servers in Australia

Mullvad’s server list shows five Australian cities: Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. That is as good as the biggest names for local coverage. Worldwide it lists servers in 50 countries, a smaller network than NordVPN or Surfshark, and every one runs on WireGuard: Mullvad retired OpenVPN in early 2026.

Privacy: where Mullvad stands apart

Most VPNs ask you to trust that they keep no logs. Mullvad collects so little that there is not much to log in the first place.

  • No personal details. Your account is a random number. Mullvad says it keeps no activity, IP address, DNS or connection-time logs.
  • Anonymous payment. It accepts cash by post and Monero as well as cards and PayPal. Card and PayPal payments leave the records Swedish accounting law requires.
  • Tested in practice. In April 2023 Swedish police arrived at its Gothenburg office with a search warrant. Mullvad says they left with nothing because the customer data they wanted did not exist.
  • Audits. Outside firms review it regularly. The latest published work includes an audit of its WireGuard implementation by Assured Security Consultants in early 2026 and a review of its account and payment systems by X41 D-Sec.

Mullvad is based in Sweden and wholly owned by its two founders.

Features and apps

Mullvad has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, with a kill switch, split tunnelling, multi-hop routing through two servers, and DNS-based blocking of ads, trackers and malware. It also offers quantum-resistant tunnels and a feature called DAITA that pads traffic to make it harder to analyse. One account covers five devices. Port forwarding was removed in July 2023.

Mullvad speed and streaming: what independent tests show

Speed results are good, particularly close to home. Top10VPN’s August 2026 review recorded a 6% loss on nearby servers and 15% internationally, and found torrenting almost unaffected. Security.org measured about a 2% drop on a nearby server and 25% on a long-haul connection to South Africa. PCWorld’s June 2026 test was less flattering, keeping a little over half of the base download speed.

Streaming is the weak point. Top10VPN found Netflix and BBC iPlayer blocked, though Prime Video worked, and PCWorld called streaming hit or miss. If overseas television is why you want a VPN, look at NordVPN or Surfshark instead.

Is Mullvad worth it for Australians?

Yes, if privacy is the reason you are buying. Nothing else we cover asks for so little information, and the flat price is refreshingly plain. Choose something else if you want the lowest monthly cost, streaming, or more than five devices.

Using Mullvad in Australia

  • Australian servers: see Mullvad VPN's server list for current Australian locations.
  • Billing: charged in EUR, so the Australian-dollar cost moves with the exchange rate.

Australian law requires internet providers to keep customers' metadata for two years. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server, so your internet provider can see that you are using a VPN but not which sites you visit. It does not make you anonymous to the VPN provider itself, which is why the provider's logging policy and audits matter.
