Intego VPN
Number 5 of 16 in our calculated orderGood for Mac owners who already pay for Intego ONE
Intego VPN makes sense if you already use Intego's Mac security suite and want the VPN that comes with it. On 22 October 2026 Australian TV, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and ABEMA played, but Netflix blocked us in the US, UK and Japan. The catch is server switching: with default settings our real IP showed for about 2 seconds, and with the kill switch on the switch never finished and left the Mac offline.

- You want a VPN on its own (it comes only inside the Intego ONE Complete security suite)
The short version
Intego VPN is for Mac owners who already use Intego ONE, Intego’s security suite, and want the VPN that comes with it. I tested it on the evening of 22 October 2026 from our Melbourne NBN line. Australian TV, BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, ITVX and ABEMA played, while Netflix blocked us in the US, UK and Japan.
The catch is changing servers. With the app’s default settings, our real IP address showed for about 2 seconds when I switched from Tokyo to London. With the kill switch on, a London to Tokyo switch never finished, and the Mac stayed offline for about half an hour. There is no Melbourne server either: Australia means Sydney.
Pros
- BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 and ITVX played on the London server (22 October 2026)
- ABEMA’s live news played on the Tokyo server (22 October 2026)
- SBS On Demand, ABC iview, 9Now and Prime Video played on the Sydney server (22 October 2026)
- No DNS leak on any server I tried, and no WebRTC leak (22 October 2026)
- Torrenting allowed, and only a little slower than without the VPN (22 October 2026)
- Brazil and South Africa are real local servers, not virtual ones (22 October 2026)
Cons
- Our real IP showed for about 2 seconds in a server switch on default settings (22 October 2026)
- With the kill switch on, a server switch never reconnected and left the Mac offline (22 October 2026)
- Netflix US, UK and Japan all showed a VPN or proxy error (22 October 2026)
- No Melbourne server, one UK city and no India location
- Sydney speed varied a lot between runs on the same evening (22 October 2026)
- Sold only inside the Intego ONE Complete suite, billed in US dollars
Who should buy Intego VPN?
Buy it if you already have Intego ONE on your Mac and want a VPN without a second subscription. It also suits you if British TV or Japanese live TV is why you want a VPN: iPlayer, Channel 4, ITVX and ABEMA all played on 22 October 2026.
Skip it if you want American Netflix, if you hop between countries often, or if you want a server in Melbourne or India. If the VPN is the main thing you are buying, the providers under alternatives did better in our own October 2026 tests.
Our October 2026 tests from Melbourne
The result that matters most came at 9.22 pm on 22 October 2026. I switched Intego VPN from Tokyo to London with the app on its default settings, while a script on the test Mac checked my public IP address every second or so. For about 2 seconds it saw my real Melbourne address before London took over.
I ran every test on the test Mac mini at home in Melbourne between 8.18 pm and 10.25 pm, on Intego ONE 1.4.2 for macOS. Intego supplied the licence, Intego ONE Complete, which the app says renews on 22 October 2027. I measured the line with the VPN off first, so each result is against the same line that evening.
Intego VPN lives inside a suite with antivirus, a firewall and a Mac cleaner. For a fair VPN test, every feature except the VPN was switched off: real-time antivirus, the firewall’s filtering and alerts, automatic updates and data sharing. One part could not be turned off in the app: the firewall’s network monitor stayed active throughout.
The protocol setting stayed on Automatic, which uses Lightway, the protocol ExpressVPN developed. The app also offers Lightway over UDP or TCP, both labelled post-quantum. A second, morning sitting is still to come.

Switching servers: our real IP showed, and the kill switch did not help
With the kill switch off, which is how the app arrives, our real IP showed for about 2 seconds when I switched from Tokyo to London at 9.22 pm. The IP check caught my Melbourne address five times in a row before the London server answered. NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN did not show our address in the same test on their default settings.
What it means: for those seconds, any site, app or torrent you had running could see your real home address. Switching takes one double-click in the location list, with no warning or confirmation.
So I turned on the kill switch, the setting meant to stop your traffic leaving without the VPN, and switched from London to Tokyo at 9.27 pm. My address never showed, but the switch never finished either. The connection stayed dead to the end of the watch, and the kill switch then kept the whole Mac offline for about half an hour, until I turned the kill switch off by hand.
That is not a pass. A kill switch that blocks everything is doing its job, but a server switch that never reconnects leaves you without internet until you notice and fix it. On a laptop in a hotel, that could mean a missed call home.
An earlier switch, London to Tokyo at 9.15 pm, did not show my address, but the watch started late and missed its start, so it proves little. After it, the Tokyo server dropped out briefly three times within about 10 seconds. I have not yet forced the connection to drop with the kill switch on, which is the job Intego’s app describes for it: it “automatically stops all internet traffic if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly”.

Leaks: DNS and WebRTC stayed private

| Switching servers, kill switch on | ⚠ No leak, but did not reconnect Never reached the new server; the kill switch then kept the device offline22 Oct 2026 |
"Could not test" means our line had no IPv6 to leak; it is not a failure.
- DNS: no leak on 22 October 2026 on Sydney, San Francisco, London, Tokyo, São Paulo or Johannesburg. Every lookup went to the VPN server itself, so our internet provider could not see which sites I looked up.
- WebRTC: on the Sydney server, BrowserLeaks’ WebRTC check in Chrome saw only the VPN address. WebRTC is the browser feature behind video calls, and a leak there can reveal your address even with the VPN on.
- IPv6: our line has no IPv6, so I could not test for an IPv6 leak. If your NBN connection uses IPv6, we cannot yet tell you whether Intego covers it.
- Switching servers: see above. The 9.27 pm switch with the kill switch on exposed nothing, but it never reconnected.
Speed: Sydney varied, overseas was steady
On the Sydney server, speed swung between runs on 22 October 2026. The first run at 8.39 pm was slow on all three downloads. When I retested at 9.03 pm and 9.04 pm, four of six downloads came close to my line speed and two were slow again. Sydney is variable rather than simply slow.

Our own measurements on a Melbourne home connection of about 40 Mbps at the time, October 2026. Changes are against the speed of the same line with the VPN off, measured the same day.
Share of our download speed kept with Intego VPN on, against the same line with the VPN off, measured the same day. "100%+" means that run was faster than our run with the VPN off minutes earlier (40 Mbps); a home line's speed varies through the evening.
Overseas servers were steadier. San Francisco kept 99%, London 77% and Tokyo 100%+. Each left more than enough for HD streaming, which is what you pick those servers for. London’s ping of 334 ms rules out fast online games on a UK server, and you may notice a short lag on a video call home.
Uploads dropped further on every overseas server, which matters little for streaming but would slow a big photo backup. I ran each server in one evening, so treat these figures as one sample.
Locations: no Melbourne, one UK city, no India
The app counted 49 locations on 22 October 2026, and the only Australian one is Sydney. If you are in Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane and want a server in your own city, Intego does not have one. 9Now proved the point: on the Sydney server it served the NSW feed, so you get Sydney’s local news.
The other countries most Australians want are thin too. The UK has one location, East London. The US has four: Miami, New York, San Francisco and Dallas, with no Los Angeles. Japan has Tokyo.
There is no India location at all: the list jumps from Hungary to Indonesia. If you need an Indian address for banking or streaming while travelling, Intego cannot help.
Brazil and South Africa are real local servers. My IP check placed the Brazil server in São Paulo and the South Africa server in Johannesburg. Both left enough speed for HD streaming: Brazil kept 68% of my speed and South Africa 69%. The ping is long, as distance makes it, so they suit streaming local TV better than gaming.
Australian TV, banking and games
SBS On Demand, ABC iview, 9Now and Prime Video all played on the Sydney server on 22 October 2026. Stan’s site loaded, but I have no Stan account to press play. 7plus could not be tested, because it gives an HDCP error on this Mac with or without a VPN.

"Site opened, not played" means the service's site loaded through the VPN but we had no account to play anything.
That matters most if you are travelling: an Australian server that plays SBS, iview and 9Now gets you the news and shows you would watch at home.
CommBank NetBank, NAB Internet Banking and myGov all opened their log-on pages normally with the VPN on, with no block or extra check. I did not sign in, so I cannot tell you whether a bank asks for more after that.
For games, I timed connections from the test Mac to Amazon’s Sydney data centre, where many game servers run. Through Intego’s Sydney server it took 40 ms, against 31 ms with the VPN off, so the VPN was slower to Sydney that evening. You would only notice the difference in fast competitive games.
Overseas streaming: British and Japanese TV played; Netflix did not

"Site opened, not played" means the service's site loaded through the VPN but we did not play anything.

- United Kingdom (East London): BBC iPlayer played BBC One live after about 30 seconds of loading. BBC News live stalled first, buffering for more than 45 seconds. Channel 4 played its live channel. ITVX played The Party after about a minute and a half of UK adverts. Netflix UK showed “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”.
- United States (San Francisco): Netflix showed the same VPN or proxy message. Pluto TV played a live channel and Tubi played The Social Network. Hulu’s US site loaded, but I have no Hulu account.
- Japan (Tokyo): ABEMA played its live news channel. Netflix Japan blocked us. TVer showed no region block, but pressing play opened its required viewer survey, which I did not fill in, so I have no TVer playback result.
Prime Video played in Sydney, San Francisco and London on our Australian account. I did not check which country’s catalogue it showed abroad, so do not count on it for the US or UK library.
If American Netflix is why you want a VPN, Intego did not deliver on 22 October 2026. Streaming services keep closing the doors VPNs open, so treat each result as true on the evening I tested it.
Torrenting: allowed, and a little slower
Torrenting worked on the Sydney server at 8.41 pm on 22 October 2026, slightly slower than the same download with the VPN off nine minutes earlier. I used the official Debian DVD torrent, downloaded for 2 minutes with aria2c, capped uploads, did not seed, and deleted the partial file.
| VPN | Our torrent speed | P2P policy | Kill switch | Port forwarding | Audited by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.7 MiB/s tested October 2026 | Allowed in our test tested October 2026 | Not checked | Not checked | – |
Torrent speed is the average download rate we measured on an Australian server, with its date. Features and auditors are as each provider lists them; "Not checked" means we have not recorded it yet.
The people sharing a file set much of the pace, so one run is a rough guide. For a big download it means a slightly longer wait, nothing more.
Still to test
I have tested Intego VPN only in the evening; a morning sitting is next. I have not yet forced a connection drop with the kill switch on, tried the iPhone app, or played anything on TVer. We will add each result here, dated, when we have it.
Intego VPN deal in Australia (checked 22 Oct 2026)
Intego VPN is not running a named offer at our latest check. Its lowest price is US$4.06 (about A$5.79) a month on the Intego ONE Complete plan, paid upfront as US$97.49 for 2 years, then US$149.99 every 2 years. That is the price Intego VPN shows any Australian visitor; you do not need a coupon code for it.
Compare it with every VPN's current deal on VPN deals in Australia.
What Intego VPN costs
Intego VPN only comes in Intego ONE Complete, Intego’s Mac security suite, which also includes antivirus, a firewall and a Mac cleaner. Intego’s website blocks our automatic price checker, so we check its prices by hand on its own buy page. The table shows that check and its date.
| Plan | Term | Per month | Paid upfront | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intego ONE Complete | 2 years 1 Mac + 1 iPhone; VPN, antivirus, firewall and SmartClean; 35% off the first 2 years, then US$149.99 every 2 years | US$4.06 (about A$5.79) | US$97.49 | US$149.99 / 2 years |

GST may apply.
Checked 22 Oct 2026 Price and plan details read from www.intego.com.
The lowest price is US$4.06 (about A$5.79) a month when you pay for 2 years upfront. After that first term it renews at US$149.99 (about A$213.90) every 2 years.
That price buys the whole suite for one Mac and one iPhone; Intego sells larger plans for more devices at a higher price. It offers 30 days to ask for your money back.

Intego VPN charges in USD. At the current reference rate the first payment is about A$139.03.
Of the 16 VPNs we price, 10 have a lower advertised monthly price than Intego VPN.

Is Intego VPN safe? Privacy and audits
We have not yet checked Intego’s privacy policy, logging promises or audits, and we will not describe a privacy policy we have not read. Until we have, judge Intego VPN on the test results above.
Apps and features
We have not read Intego VPN's list of apps yet.
The Intego ONE Complete plan we were given includes Intego VPN for Mac and iPhone. I have tested only the Mac app so far.
On the Mac, the VPN is one tab in the Intego ONE app, beside Antivirus, Firewall and SmartClean. The VPN page has three settings:
- Locations: 49 in the app on 22 October 2026, with a recommended list that put Sydney first.
- VPN protocol: Automatic by default, with Lightway over UDP or TCP as the other choices.
- Kill switch: blocks all traffic if the VPN drops. It is off by default and turns on with one toggle, with no prompt (see the switching test above).
The app also shows your real IP address while you are connected, so take care if you share screenshots of it. Before I first connected, it had United Arab Emirates selected, so check the location before you press connect.
Using Intego VPN in Australia
- Australian servers: see Intego VPN's server list for current Australian locations.
- Billing: charged in USD, so the Australian-dollar cost moves with the exchange rate.
- Refund period: 30 days.
Australian law requires internet providers to keep customers' metadata for two years. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server, so your internet provider can see that you are using a VPN but not which sites you visit. It does not make you anonymous to the VPN provider itself, which is why the provider's logging policy and audits matter.
Alternatives to Intego VPN
If you want Lightway without the suite, ExpressVPN developed it. If quiet server switching matters, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN did not show our address in a switch on default settings in our October 2026 tests. For Mac-specific picks, see our VPN for Mac guide. The list below is picked by a fact in our data.

How we keep this review current
Intego’s website blocks our automatic checker, so we check its prices and plans by hand, with the date of the last check beside each figure. Our test results carry the date they were measured, and each retest is added here with its own date. Every 2026 figure comes from our test log.
